Running gag

Running gag scrutinises power and gender ratios in the realm of humour: Who’s allowed to be funny, and who laughs at whom? On the lookout for female role models in the history of humour, Sööt/Zeyringer examine slapstick comedies from the 1910s, shedding a light on gender and humour at a time when the role of women was undergoing major changes.

Premiered in April 2018 in the program of brut Wien.

The starting point of this lecture performance are the courageous, extraordinary and witty heroines of the silent-film era in the early 20th century. While they were influential, famous and popular during their lifetimes, they are mostly forgotten today. In the course of their research in archives, Sööt/Zeyringer discovered female pioneers of silent film named Marie Dressler, Ossi Oswalda and Sarah Duhamel. In their films, they wreaked havoc, dressed in men’s clothes and put their bodies to highly expressive uses. Many female actors, directors, screenwriters and producers used humour as an empowerment strategy and a method to break through existing limitations. In Running gag, Sööt/Zeyringer use historical footage, film clips, facts and personal stories to collage a fictional documentary about the ever changing relationship between gender and humour now and then.

Running gag questions power and gender relations in humour – who is allowed to be funny and who laughs at whom? While looking for female role models in the history of humour, Sööt/Zeyringer deals with the slapstick comedies of the 1910s and highlights gender and humour at the time of great change in the role of women.

The performance premieres in April 2018 at brut Vienna. At the Fleetstreet residency in Hamburg Sööt/Zeyringer presents a work-in-progress showing.

Tiina Sööt and Dorothea Zeyringer work in Vienna as a duo since 2012. Their performative work is situated at the intersection of visual arts, dance and theatre and has been presented at imagetanz brut Wien, FEEDBACK festival Tanzquartier Wien, Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava Tallinn, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich and Schauspiel Köln among others.

Exhibition “On time / Õigeaegselt”

Sööt/Zeyringer On time

Sööt/Zeyringer’s exhibition at Hobusepea Gallery in Tallinn 7.06. – 03.07.2017

Opening of the exhibition on the 7th of June at 7pm. Performances during the opening will start at 7pm
The exhibition is open 7.06. – 03.07.2017
Hobusepea galerii, Hobusepea 2, Tallinn

Sööt/Zeyringer’s live performances and video works are based on movement and text which are combined in rhythmical and poetic structures. In their work they try to find beauty, poetry, wit and absurdity in every-day acts, language and objects. Sööt/Zeyringer focuses on seemingly self-evident situations that are almost imperceptible, but most of us can identify with. In a poetic and humoristic way the works turn everyday procedures and acts upside down, revealing the performative potential of simple situations. By putting these insignificant moments into a new context, Sööt/Zeyringer‘s work speaks about larger matters.

The show “On time” combines 3 performative works by Sööt/Zeyringer. At the opening 2 of the pieces are shown as live performances.

lonely lonely @ FEEDBACK, Tanzquartier Vienna

WED 26. APR. 2017 – 16.00 TQW / Studios
THU 27. APR. 2017 – 16.00 TQW / Studios

Sööt/Zeyringer once again invite the audience to discover their unique and minimalist performance cosmos. In lonely lonely, they investigate the tension between desired and undesired loneliness, the need for human warmth and the simultaneous need for privacy. Using dry humour, subtle irony and cardboard boxes, the two performers create a rhythmic-choreographic dialogue on being lonesome and being together, while in the midst of minimalist and accurate execution, moments of surprise and poetry flare up.

With their fine sense of humour, poetry and absurdity, the choreographic works of artist duo Sööt/Zeyringer explore every-day situations, objects and language. After inviting the audience to visit one of their rehearsals during last year’s imagetanz festival, Sööt/Zeyringer are now guests of imagetanz with the premiere of We will figure it out.

We will figure it out deals with the creative potential of seemingly unsolvable situations. Sööt/Zeyringer explore strategies to leave beaten artistic tracks, turning obstacles upside down, slaving away against resistances or simply changing the rules altogether. In the middle of all this chaos, terrible, insurmountable difficulties and unsolvable situations become the key components of their piece, giving them critical impulses for their artistic work.
